The Unemployment Appeals Clinic is a volunteer organization staffed by University of Wisconsin Law students and supervising attorneys. The purpose of the clinic is to help provide representation to the unemployed in the local community, most of whom cannot find legal help elsewhere. Because Wisconsin state law limits the fees that attorneys can charge in unemployment cases, most attorneys do not take cases that involve unemployment insurance claims. The clinic attempts to fill this gap in legal services, while providing excellent hands-on legal experience for law students. The Clinic only deals with claims involving Wisconsin Unemployment Law.

Our goal is to help clients file unemployment compensation claims with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD). We act primarily as an information center to help members of the community prepare an Unemployment Insurance (formerly Unemployment Compensation) hearing for themselves. However, we also provide student advocates to appear at the administrative hearings. Finally, we may help clients write briefs to the Labor and Industry Review Commission ( LIRC) to obtain unemployment benefits. The Unemployment Appeals Clinic also publishes a guidebook available here in .pdf format on preparing for an Unemployment Appeals hearings with the DWD. The book is meant for both students and clients and explains how to prepare and win such a hearing.

The clinic is located at the Labor Temple, 1602 S. Park St., Madison, WI 53715, Rm. 106. The clinic meets most Monday nights during the school year, and every other week during the summer from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. The only way to schedule an appointment with the clinic is through the United Way (dial 2-1-1 from any local phone), though time permitting, we also accept walk-ins. Contact the student administrator, Brian Cadwell, at uwuac@rso.wisc.edu with any questions concerning the clinic.
